Making a fine piece last: the right habits
A well-made shoe, bag or suit can stay with you for years. Here are the simple habits that make the difference.

A piece from a great house is made to last, provided you give it time to rest and store it properly. Nothing complicated: just a few habits to adopt.
Shoes
Alternate: leather needs a day’s rest to dry out between wears.
Slip in wooden shoe trees as soon as you take them off: they absorb moisture and keep the shape.
Brush before you feed, and feed before you polish.
Have them resoled by a cobbler before the sole wears through.
Leather goods
Keep the bag in its dust bag, away from light, padded with tissue paper so that it keeps its shape.
Do not hang it by its handles: they lose their shape.
Keep it away from heat, and let wet leather dry in the open air.
Suits
A wide hanger, shaped to the shoulder.
A brush after each wear; dry cleaning as rarely as possible.
A night in the open air before going back into the wardrobe.
